Over the past few years, we've seen Earth Day expand from a single-day celebration to fill the entire month of April. But you don't have to wait until "Earth Month" for your company to share your environmental stories. In fact, we encourage you to speak up year-round. In February 2022, Illumina shared this story about Checkerspot, one of the companies in its Accelerator program. Checkerspot is exploring how microalgae can change the way modern industry makes everything from plastics, paint, skincare products and even nutritional supplements. Microalgae can be a cheaper and greener solution to petroleum-based materials.
Smart Irrigation: Improving Water Conservation
Keeping plants hydrated in the heat takes a lot of resources, but Home Depot is taking steps to make this process more efficient and sustainable. Last August, they wrote about their partnership with Hydropoint to install a smart irrigation system in their stores that improves water conservation by up to 40%.
Champion® Athleticwear Partners with the Renewal Workshop to Give Consumers Additional Eco-Friendly Apparel Choices
Back in September, Champion® Athleticwear announced a partnership with the Renewal Workshop to extend the life of their apparel and reduce landfill waste. Together, they launched the Champion Renewed line, which features the brand’s iconic Reverse Weave® sweatshirts. This line provides a new eco-friendly option for consumers.
To Reduce Marine Pollution, Innovation is in the (Plastic) Bag
To combat the issue of plastic waste in oceans, fashion designer Tom Ford launched his Plastic Innovation Prize, a competition that challenges innovators to remake disposable plastic from less-harmful materials. In March, HP’s Chief Impact Officer and Global Head of Sustainable Impact Ellen Jackowski joined the competition’s panel of judges, and HP plans to test the finalists’ alternatives to thin-film plastic polybags in their supply chains.
Cummins' Technology to Be Part of First of Its Kind Hydrogen Plant in Florida
Global power leader Cummins Inc. is innovating for a more sustainable future. In March 2022, they announced that they will supply a 25-megawatt electrolyzer system for Florida’s first of its kind “green” hydrogen plant. This project is a step toward unlocking 100% carbon-free electricity.
